Resource-conscious web design · New builds & upgrades

Big impact.Less data.

Your website can be impressive and let visitors choose how much spectacle they want. We develop resource-conscious websites and a saving mode that changes what the technology actually does.

For new websites and existing ones. Individually planned, without blanket savings claims.

Same website. Your choice.

Saving modeThe essentials. Less background work.

CAZ can shift down a gear, too.

Turn on saving mode and visit our homepage. The elaborate introduction becomes a clear overview. You choose when to start videos and 3D experiences. Your choice follows you to the next page.

Your choice stays saved in this browser when browser storage is available.

This changes the real website. Files already loaded do not disappear from your data usage. The difference is particularly visible on the next visit.

What we can build for you

Start fresh. Or improve what works.

A good start need not mean starting over. First, we identify the changes that fit your website, budget and visitors.

01

Your new website

We plan resource-conscious foundations from the beginning. For elaborate media and immersive experiences, we can develop a clear choice between the experience and saving mode.

  • Individual design with understandable visitor journeys
  • Appropriate image sizes, efficient delivery and on-demand loading
  • Media on request and alternative routes into 3D content
  • Usability, readability and search engine foundations

02

Your existing website

We examine what your website actually downloads and processes. Then we address the biggest avoidable loads and assess whether a saving mode can be added properly.

  • A technical review with clear priorities
  • A review of images, video, fonts, extensions and scripts
  • Saving mode adapted to your system and its capabilities
  • A documented before-and-after comparison

Scope and price depend on the project. For third-party systems, we check access, dependencies and available changes before making a commitment.

What visitors gain

Less overhead. More choice.

On the move

Fewer unnecessary downloads are particularly useful on a weak connection or a limited mobile data plan.

On older devices

Less continuous graphics processing can reduce device workload. Important information should remain accessible without powerful 3D hardware.

When reading matters

A calmer view helps people who need information and do not want movement in the background.

For your business

Purposeful functionality and maintained technology make a website clearer and easier to develop further.

Where we make changes

More than a dark coat of paint.

A black background alone does not make a website sustainable. We look at the whole usage chain and explain what can actually be measured.

  1. 01

    Server

Suitable infrastructure, compression and useful caching. Hosting claims need evidence from the provider.

  2. 02

    Transfer

Load files where they are needed. Large media on demand and images sized for their actual use.

  3. 03

    Device

Reduce continuous decorative rendering and automatic playback. Keep content and functionality usable.

  4. 04

    Display

Dark areas can save energy on OLED. On LCD, the result depends on factors including the backlight.

Black is an option. Not proof.

OLED pixels emit their own light, so black areas can save energy. Conventional LCDs often continue to illuminate dark areas from behind. The device, screen brightness and content determine the actual difference. We therefore do not promise a fixed energy saving from colours alone.

Readability comes first. Light grey on black only makes sense when contrast is sufficient. Colour, resolution and power consumption do not have a simple fixed relationship.

Our mark has readable criteria.

“CAZ saving mode” names our own voluntary technical standard. The mark always links here, to its requirements, checks and limits. It is not independent certification or proof of a climate-neutral website.

CAZ saving modeOur own standard · v1.0

CAZ Resource Standard v1.0 · 18 October 2026

The criteria below describe the agreed technical scope. For client projects, our handover records the pages checked, version, conditions and outstanding issues. Changes to media, extensions or code may require another review.

  1. 01

    Heavy content only on request

Decorative videos, 3D scenes and external media do not start automatically in saving mode. Their media files and 3D programs are not fetched until the visitor deliberately activates them.

Check: inspect network requests on a fresh page load in saving mode, before clicking any media.

  2. 02

    Quiet when nothing is happening

Decorative animation, parallax effects and continuous 3D rendering stay off in saving mode. A film deliberately started by the visitor can still play.

Check: observe the idle page and inspect running animations and repeated rendering work.

  3. 03

    Content remains accessible

Services, projects, navigation and enquiries remain usable without 3D. Immersive features receive a clear entry point and an alternative. Fewer effects must not mean less information.

Check: follow the same important visitor journeys in both modes using a keyboard, phone and desktop.

  4. 04

Deliver files at the right size

Image sizes fit their placement. Files are compressed and cached where appropriate. Large background media are replaced by lightweight previews or text.

Check: compare image dimensions, transferred file sizes and caching behaviour on first and repeat visits.

  5. 05

    Readability before darkness

Sufficient contrast, visible keyboard focus and clear labels remain essential. Light grey text on black is one design option; illegible text is not an efficiency measure.

Check: inspect contrast and usability for the actual colours and interaction states.

  6. 06

    One choice across the website

The browser remembers the setting as visitors move between public pages. They can switch back at any time. Data already downloaded cannot be saved retroactively.

Check: switch modes, open another page, reload and switch back. Separately check browsers where storage is unavailable.

A switch alone is not comprehensive evidence of sustainability. This mark does not certify data centre electricity, device manufacturing or other environmental effects.

How we work

Understand first. Improve with purpose.

  1. 01

    Review

We inspect important pages and visitor journeys. Which files arrive? What runs in the background? Which technology is involved?

  2. 02

    Plan & quote

We propose a useful scope: direct improvements, an additional saving mode or a new technical foundation where needed.

  3. 03

    Build & compare

We develop, check navigation and enquiries, and compare the same pages under documented conditions.

  4. 04

    Handover & upkeep

You receive guidance for new content so future videos and extensions do not quietly undo the improvements.

Straight answers

Good to know.

Does resource-conscious web design have to be boring?

No. Good typography, clear images, understandable navigation and a strong idea do not require continuous background computation. Films and 3D can also be useful. The key questions are when they load and whether visitors have a choice.

Is this the same as an accessibility mode?

No. Resource efficiency and accessibility overlap but have different goals. Saving mode does not replace checks of contrast, keyboard controls, labels and understandable interactions. Both modes must remain usable.

Can you improve WordPress or another existing system?

Often, yes. The scope depends on the theme, extensions, hosting, source code and access. We review the specific website first and explain which changes are worthwhile and feasible.

Can I keep my videos and 3D worlds?

Yes, when they belong in the project. In saving mode, they receive a deliberate entry point or a lightweight alternative. Visitors who want the experience can activate it. The aim is to preserve access and avoid unnecessary automatic load.

Is your mark an official environmental label?

No. “CAZ saving mode — our own standard” is our voluntary technical mark with publicly described criteria. It comes from CAZ and does not confirm an independent environmental assessment.

What does development or an upgrade cost?

We discuss this based on your website and the desired scope. A small information site has different requirements from a shop or a large 3D experience. After reviewing the project, we provide an individual quote.

Does this make the entire website sustainable?

Sustainability extends beyond delivering a page: hosting, usage, maintenance and devices also matter. We improve specific technical aspects and document the scope. That does not substantiate a blanket claim covering every environmental impact.
