Background
Anyone thinking about moving to the countryside usually finds two things about a village: holiday brochures and property listings. What is missing is an honest answer to everyday questions: Is there a bakery, a doctor, a kindergarten, and how do you get around without a car? And anyone who has found an old house soon learns that rural tradespeople are booked out. dorflife is our own portal for exactly these two moments.
The challenge
The goal was comparable information for 2,031 Bavarian municipalities without writing every page by hand. The figures had to be traceable and could not gloss over anything. At the same time, the portal should not feel like official statistics but should make people want to live in the countryside. And interest in a village should be able to turn into a concrete renovation request.
Our solution
The data comes from open sources: municipal boundaries and infrastructure from OpenStreetMap, population and location data from sources including Wikidata. For every municipality, the village check counts what is recorded within the municipal boundary in five areas: shopping, health, children and school, getting around, and village life. This produces a profile, a score and a short text about the location. Each municipality page opens with a town sign in front of a village silhouette whose lighting can be switched by time of day. The pages are generated in advance with Astro and delivered statically.
A special detail
Alongside the municipality pages there is a village finder, rankings such as the highest-lying municipalities, and overviews for each district. The old-house knowledge base explains house types, construction methods, materials, damage and renovation in 62 articles and a glossary. Anyone planning a renovation answers six questions and is matched with a suitable partner company. Quotes and contracts are agreed directly with the company doing the work.
A calm view switches off motion, AI-generated illustrations are labelled, and an llms.txt serves digital assistants. The portal appears under the kommun.ai umbrella, our AI citizen assistant for municipalities.
The outcome
Every municipality gets its own town sign: here Inzell at night, followed by a profile, village check and location.
